A beautifully French or Belgium late 18th century chest of drawers with good patina of over 200 years. Four equal sized drawers with ornate brass handles and escutcheons. Raised on elegant taper legs and carved turned paterae as well as ornate neoclassical moulding to sides. Original key and locks all work as they should and drawers open very smoothly as they have been maintained. This chest was made to dismantle into three pieces to allow for installation up those narrow stone staircases. The top chest with two drawers, bottom chest with two drawers and pedestal frame and legs. These sections have now all been joined. Late 18th century probably Alsace. A substantial late 17th century solid oak chest or trunk with original lock and an original working key. Wooden pegged construction with lift lid with internal wrought iron hinges and lock. The interior with an oak lidded compartment with a secret compartment below. Good patina surface. Each side with a massive cast and wrought iron handle for carrying are all original. Massive oak turned bun feet raise this important chest to ideal heights as a centre of the room table height, ie coffee table. A rennaissance carved front with double arches supported by fluted columns.
It was customary in the earlier centuries to take your furniture with you as you moved from castle to mansion, so that you would always have your favourite pieces with you where ever you resided, hence the massive iron carry handles.

Drawer fronts with solid brass Georgian handles . All drawers opperate very smoothly. French polished finish and good blonde pine to suit many interiors nicely polished. The chest is made of baltic pine, which is quite dense and heavy with figurative knots throughout the timber. Original backing boards whilst drawer bottoms have been replaced at some time, possibly due to warping or shrinkage, as is very common across the grain. However this does not affect the practicality or aesthetics of this provincial chest . All Drawer have all been serviced to open smoothly. The whole resting on elegant Regency turned bun feet.

"The Figdor Commode " late 16th early 17th Century . This genuine walnut chest of drawers comes from the well-documented collection of Dr. Albert Figdor. The well carved paw feet supports a solid walnut carcase with three carved front walnut drawers. Walnut was a luxury timber at this time until shipping made it possible to import Mahogany logs. The fine workmanship and excellent original condition retaining its original Patina are all value points that Dr. Figdor built his famous collection around. The lift top document space retains its original hand forged hinges and lock.
Dr. Figdor was an influential international banker based in Vienna during the turn of the 1900's. He established a vast collection of early European antiques dating from the 15th century up to the 18th century. His intention was to bequeath his collection to the city of Vienna, in order to establish a core collection for the newly built Vienna Applied Arts Museum. Although there appears some confusion as to why the necessary paperwork was never processed, the collection was dispursed by three public auction, plus addenda, in Berlin in 1930. Period catalogues of the time are highly sought after reference material as they provide not only descriptions but also photos of most items. This chest still retains its original auction warehouse house label. With such excellent provenance (another value point) the rarity of any Figdor collection pieces reaching the market is impossibly scarce and provides an excellent investment opportunity. This commode was purchased was purchased at the original auction of the collection in 1930, by an very influential family now residing in Canberra, Australia, and has been in their possession until now. We are very proud to be able to offer this fine piece of 400 year old history to the connoisseur. Inspection is available.

Dimensions Height 133 cm Width 126 cm depth 55 cm An elegant Swedish Gustavian painted pine chest with five full length graduated sized drawers. All with ornate cast brass handles and escutcheons featuring the head of King Gustav III's in oval cartouche surrounded by cast swags, urns and garlands.
Each drawer opens with smoothly with drawer runners fully serviced. All original locks still in place. The ornate shaped top drawer is typical scandinavian and opens with a fitted key, supplied. The next two drawers are flanked by ionic turned and fluted half columns. All drawer runners work very smoothly and of course this is a solid sturdy piece resting of ornate provincial shaped plinth. The top of the chest has an original floral painting to the surface. The original construction of this chest was hand made and to be taken apart into three sections for easy moving up and down narrow 18th century staircases such as can be found in Stockholm's Gamla Stan ( old Town) architecture, hence the join in the side of the body. Made from nordic pine, it is a very hard heavy and dense timber and has great strength due to the cold climatic growth cycles.

Below this all drawers are in graduated size with the upper and lower drawer in ogee shaped fronts. the upper drawer with working lock and key the lower 3 drawers with matching gilt bronze handles in the Empire manner. It is most unusual to see Ashwood used in furniture and has a very pleasant grain to it. This is also a very heavy and dense timber with a grain that is similar to elm and is usually only ever used as veneer. or shipbuilding , such as masts or hulls.

The Middle drawer with a recessed demilune and the bottom drawer with ebony moulding top matching the top and base mouldings. All with vertical veneers of highly figurative blonde mahogany and each with a fully functioning steel locks. A key is also supplied. All oak drawer runners and glides have been well serviced so they open very smoothly. Period Empire raised on elegant rounded and tapering legs back and front with ebony banding. The centre of the skirt with an oval cartouche featuring applied ormolu on an ebonised field. A beutiful blonde chest of drawers in walnut and fruitwood. The well figured timber in the solid, not veneered. Four graduated drawers with original working locks and key. The Empire bronze handles and escutcheons are an elegant addition to this gorgeous simple design of the French Charles X and Louis Philippe period. All drawers run very smothly and all locks work like a swiss clockwork. The top of the chest with feature knots in the surface , is solid not veneered, is also book matched in grain, so quite a marvelous piece of the cabinetmaker's art.

A rare Australian cedar chest of drawers from the first half of the 19th century. Lovely original undisturbed patina finish, a value point, original turned cedar handles in the late Georgian style and original large georgian brass escutcheons. This piece is in full cedar and is extremely heavy. The fine figuring and weight is indicative of coastal cedar . Even the backing boards are made of cedar as are the drawer insides. The chest is Scandinavian and made of Norwegian pine, which is quite dense and heavy with figurative knots throughout the timber. Backing boards and drawer bottoms have been replaced at some time possibly due to warping or, as is very common, shrinkage across the grain. cm a good satin birch chest of drawers , Danish Empire 1820's original. Four shaped drawers with book matched satin birch fronts, flanked by stylised ebony painted 1/4 columns and raised on ebonised plinth feet. Each drawer is opened by a key , as was traditional to the period and each drawer still retains its original working steel locks and a shilled shaped escutcheon in blackened steel. The granite or marble (looks just like porphyry) slab finishes this piece of nicely. As it is nearly 200 years old some wear is to be expected along with a few tiny repairs to the gorgeous original hand cut veneers. The drawers operate smoothly, as do the locks. One original key supplied.

cm Nice original Scandianvian Empire or Biedermeier period chest of 6 drawers in mahogany, circa 1825. Nice original condition with brass key hole escutcheons and a hand cut steel key with which to open the drawers with. Each drawer is uniquely sized and all the drawer runners have been maintained to open smoothly. All the locks work properly too. The drawers are made of solid oak with book matched flame mahogany fronts. As in most European furniture of this period this piece disassembles into three sections for easy relocation. The crown top with its well carved cornice lifts off, below this the four drawer section lifts off the base with its lowest two drawers. The whole rests on fine turned front feet and block rear feet. Being in original unrestored condition where are a few minor points for complete disclosure. more images below . Some tiny veneer sections have come off around the edges of drawers, but this would only be noticed if pointed out, and does not affect their smooth operation. The very top flat surface has a shrinkage ( most likely due to central heating without moisture ). The timber underneath may well rehydrate in time and the small gap will close up nicely. Just like skin , timber does dry out too, so look after it please. A small slab of marble wouldn't look astray on top either, and as its at eye level none of this really matters. This is a genuine antique piece of furniture that would look equally at home in an English Regency , French Empire or even Biedermeier interior.

A real Scandinavian beauty, this rare Art Deco period satin birch three drawer chest of drawers is all original. It has the original gilt ormolu bronze handles and locks and key. the original crazed lacquer finish is in very good condition and the craftsmanship of this piece is just superb. A very rare BOW FRONT and raised on gently tapering legs, that follow the shape of the commode ( european term for chest of drawers) .
This particular style is reminiscent of Biedermeier revival and Swedish Gustavian style furniture of the the late 1800's and would date to the first quarter of the 20th century. Drawers run very smoothly and all locks work well with the original chrome steel key. This furniture lends itself to use in the bedroom , lounge room or hallway with its very versatile dimensions.

A rare Georgian period chest of drawers with original paintwork in faux tiger maple. original turned handles and feet all retain their original paintwork. The top has been polished to reveal the gorgeous grain of this tightly grown wood that resembles Huon pine. The painting style is also reminescient of early American Pennsylvania painted furniture and the turned legs suggest this to be the chest's origin, making it a rare find indeed. Hand made forged square shank taper nails indicate this to be truely early 1800's.
